The semi-circular Apse and Ambulatory, which is a place to walk a reflection, with their solid column, narrow arches and clear glass windows are one of the most distinctive features of the Kirk.
It is thought that Walter may have based the shape on the St John’s Chapel in the Tower of London. That chapel, whilst beautiful, is dark, whereas Walter’s creation receives the full blaze of daylight and overlooks the loch and mountains and onwards to Glenorchy and Glenstrae.
During the design of the Apse, Walter shared his plans with a friend who was an engineer. His friend exclaimed that whilst the effect might be beautiful, the design was mechanically unsound. Walter disagreed and to prove his point, Walter built a scale model of the Apse and proceeded to roll a steamroller over it.
The model stood firm and construction went ahead as planned!
