Clan Stalls and Griffons

Clan Stalls and Griffons

In the Chancel we find one of the most striking features of St Conan’s, the double row of Spanish chestnut carved Clan Stalls.

The lower sections, comprising of the twelve individually carved Griffons, we believe Walter acquired separately from the upper clan sections. Each Griffon is unique in both its facial features and stance, although some have fared better over time than others, with a little woodworm and damage seen on some of them.

So striking are they that we choose the Griffon to represent St Conan’s in our logo and we think it looks magnificent!

Above the Griffons are the clan sections. These are certainly bespoke and we suspect that they are the work of Walter himself, as he was an adept woodcarver.

Each stall shows the full coat of arms, complete with crests and badges of the chiefs who in the past had land in the neighbourhood. The craftsmanship is truly wonderful and one could spend hours examining the crests in detail. The clans and families represented are:

  • The Dukes of Clan Campbell, Argyll
  • Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll
  • MacGregor of GlenStrae
  • MacIntyre of Glen Noe
  • MacCorquodale of Loch Tromlie
  • MacNaughton of Fraoch Eilean
  • MacDougall of Lorn
  • MacNab of Barachastlain, armourers to the Earls of Argyll
  • Alma, Marchioness of Breadalbane
  • Marquis of Breadalbane of Glenorchy and Taymouth

The tartan kneelers were made by a local lady and are representative of the clan colours.
