These stairs lead down to the crypt, which is another of Walter’s idiosyncratic additions to the Kirk. As a Presbyterian church, there are no burials on site, so why would the Kirk need a Crypt? Simply because Walter wanted one!
The gates to the crypt are again by the famous Thomas Hadden and show the Galley of Lorne, otherwise know as Lymphads, the symbol of the Campbells and of the Duke of Argyll.
Hadden also made the railings for the Bruce and you can see regal crowns inset into the rails.
The Crypt is currently too dangerous to be open to the public, but once we have raised enough funds, we are hoping to soon have it made safe and open for viewing, as it is spectacular.

St Conan’s Kirk requires ongoing maintenance and it is through donation that we are are able to maintain and improve this building and keep it open for the public to enjoy. So if you are able, please use one of the following links to donate by text message.
