Here in the cloisters, we can see what are windows, but without their glass and are again an example of Walter Campbells desire to recycle and mix new and old architecture.
The windows come from the 12th Century mediaeval church of St Mary’s, Inchinnan. The church was demolished in the early 19th century and the location now is the main runway for Glasgow Airport.
Walter had the windows brought over and if you look closely, you are able to see the original marks that the stonemasons made over 900 years ago when they carved the stone. We believe some of the numbers are more recent and likely done as a guide for the stonemasons who installed them here, at St Conan’s.
Quite what some of the marks mean, such as those shown below, remains a mystery!

St Conan’s Kirk requires ongoing maintenance and it is through donation that we are are able to maintain and improve this building and keep it open for the public to enjoy. So if you are able, please use one of the following links to donate by text message.
