Tucked away in this corner, you will find carved into the stone a representation of a Pilgrim Knight. This is purported to be Colin Campbell of Glenorchy who lived in Kilchurn Castle. He went on a Crusade to the Holy land and was away for 7 long years, leaving his wife to look after his affairs.
Whilst away his unscrupulous neighbour, Baron MacCorquadale, intercepted all his messages and convinced his wife that he was dead.
Resigned to the fact of her husband’s demise, she agreed to marry the Baron. The wedding day arrived and there was much merriment at the castle. However, Campbell had got wind of the plan and had hurried back, arriving that day. He slipped in unnoticed, his clothes mostly rags from his journey.
As was the custom, he was given food, but insisted he would only take a drink from the hands of the lady herself. She agreed and gave him a cup of wine. When he returned the cup, she looked and found her husbands ring in the bottom! “My husband!” she exclaimed. MacCorquadale fled the scene and his lands were later captured by Campbells son.
