Walking onto the Sun Dial terrace you’re presented with one of the most beautiful views in the West Highlands and can instantly understand why Walter Campbell wanted to build his Kirk here.
Immediately below are the waters of Loch Awe which wind away to the right for more than 20 miles. To the left is the ruin of Kilchurn Castle and beyond stretches the vista of Ben Lui, capped in snow until late April and overlooking the three great glens of Lochy, Orchy and Strae.
On the far side of the Loch, you may spot a round man made island or Crannog. This pre-Christian settlement of stone and timber protected a lochside community from attack.
The inscription on the sundial “the day dawns and the shadows flee away”, is from the Song of Solomon IV:6 and on the surrounding semi-circle parapet below “thy sun shall no more go down” is from IS IX:20. Both inscriptions are testament to his mother.
