The Norman Archway

The Norman Archway

From the Cloister, you enter the Kirk itself through an elaborately carved Norman archway. This is a copy of the archway found at Whithorn, Galloway.

Scotland’s first Saint, St Ninian, arrived there in the 5th century. This became a place of pilgrimage and in 1329 King Robert the Bruce also paid homage here seeking forgiveness by doing penance for his sins, two months prior to his death in June 1329 at Cardross.

Of course, a Norman Archway is another of Walter Campbells architectural whims. St Conan’s is not a Norman Church, but he wanted one anyway!

St Conan’s Kirk requires ongoing maintenance and it is through donation that we are are able to maintain and improve this building and keep it open for the public to enjoy. So if you are able, please use one of the following links to donate by text message.
