This is the Tracery Window. It’s original home was 70 miles away in the Abbey on Iona as it sat in the East Transept of the Abbey.
Both Walter and his sister, Helen, were heavily involved in the restoration of the Abbey and its transformation from a picturesque ruin to a fully functioning church.
The Duke of Argyll owned Iona and also contributed greatly to the Abbey, eventually gifting it to a Trust dedicated to the promotion of religious tolerance.
Helen was gifted the Tracery Window as recognition of the financial and religious support she gave.
As the Abbey on Iona was started in 570AD, this may well be the oldest thing in the Kirk!

St Conan’s Kirk requires ongoing maintenance and it is through donation that we are are able to maintain and improve this building and keep it open for the public to enjoy. So if you are able, please use one of the following links to donate by text message.
