As wonderful as stonework in the Kirk is, it is in dire need of repointing. the A program of repointing in lime will need almost the whole building to have a scaffold tower at some point to allow the laborious, time consuming and vital job to be done. We still have all the major towers to repairs as well as the crypt walls.
We also have some stonework repairs internally and externally that will need expert conservation. Although only a “small job” one highlight of our works was the repair and conservation of the Lion and returning him to the centre of the Cloisters.
The lion was originally damaged some years ago, when some local boys, climbing over him, knocked him off his plinth and broke his jaw. Curiously, the stonemason who made the repairs was one of those very same boys!
