A Film Club for St Conan’s?

March 2, 2025

Now that our nearest cinema in Oban has closed there may be an opportunity, and a need, to establish a community film club. What we do should reflect the fact that people’s viewing habits have changed due to the rise of on-demand film and TV services and we need to test if there really is an appetite to set up a community film club at St Conan’s Kirk.

The type of things we might consider could be a series of themed shows say for children or around a film genre or around say architecture and heritage. We might also partner with other organisations interested in promoting film and cinema and host films with refreshments or with guest speakers. The possibilities are endless! We also are also exploring the cost implications of a club and how much we would have to charge to cover costs.

The proposed refurbishment works for St Conan’s Kirk, which subject to approval in the coming months, will be funded in part by the National Lottery Heritage Fund will create many more usable and accessible parts of this beautiful building. When the works are complete the ideal location for a film club might well be in the crypt but until then we will be exploring setting it up in either in the glass box or in the main Nave or Chancel areas.

If you have a view on setting up a local film club, would like to attend such a club or would like to help organise them please contact Takki Sulaiman via takki1@btinternet.com.

  1. Film club sounds a good idea. Might be a bit difficult for elderly people to access the crypt.

  2. Hi, I love the idea. Very much needed for the community. I would be very interested in being part of the film club/helping out and/or attending as a customer to see films. My favourite genre is horror and thrillers and to have film showings in the crypt of that genre would be great. It would be excellent in my opinion. All types of genres could be shown from comedy to childrens films,, romance to old classics. Even international films and perhaps live cultural and choir performances, including classical. Regarding showing any films in the crypt, is there an alternative access for the disabled/elderly. Even could offer private bookings for a showing to individuals for a fee and appropriate films showing at various times of the year.

  3. GREAT idea we would definately support this. Suggest films that will have a broad appeal too. Should be a great way to raise funds. Horror movies in the crypt for me!
