Last week one of our great supporters, Joy Blakeney, brought the 8th and final of a series of lovely cushions which she has been making over the past 2 or 3 years. Joy has been learning the art of upholstery and decided to use her new skills to add to the ambience of the interior of St Conan’s. As you can see, Joy’s cushions are bright scarlet to not only match the pulpit fall and the organ screen curtains, but also to add contrasting warmth against the grey granite in the chancel and apse. All these thick red cushions look wonderful!
We very much appreciate Joy’s generosity!
“It is a win-win”, says Joy. “I have the pleasure of learning a new skill and being able to put it to good use, while St Conan’s also benefits”.
Joy has already made cushions for the 4 “Dolphin” chairs which sit between the columns of the apse, a cushion for the imposing “Caroline” chair (not shown in the photos) which bears the initials of Walter Douglas Campbell’s beloved mother and for two additional chairs.
Now, Joy has brought a bespoke cushion for the “Old Greyfriars” chair. Walter was a great acquirer of antiquities and this chair originally sat, not in the current Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, but in the Old Greyfriars which stood from around 1720 till 1845. The chair looks splendid with its new cushion!
