Spruced-up for the Season!

April 12, 2026

Despite the cold and rain, St Conan’s dedicated team turned out in force for this year’s spring spruce-up day!

The list of tasks inside and out was lengthy: we are happy to report that most things were achieved. The kirk is noticeably brighter and shinier inside. The floors and ledges were hoovered, sandstone mini-drifts under radiators brushed up, radiators themselves wiped. Windows were washed with a homemade eco solution.

The lovely range of wooden fixtures and furniture also received attention. The organ-screen got a really good brush and feed, the chairs with their new red cushions were cleaned, dark wood was fed and and polished. The glass box exhibition area is positively gleaming!

The mezzanine store was sorted through and reorganised, a new area was neatly arranged for our catering supplies and the glassbox exhibition area was refreshed. A door to the lochside which has been stuck for a while, is now unstuck and has been freshly stained a richer brown.

Outside, barrowloads of leaves were raked up, shrubs were pruned, gravel was carted and spread on the muddier paths, and deep puddles on the drive were filled. The long path running parallel to the road was cleaned from end to end.

We had a new project on the list this year: the refurbishment of the pew footrests. These have been looking very sad with grubby torn felt, scuffed wood and some missing feet. Today, step one was completed: removal of the old felt and as many nails as possible.

Everyone really did work very hard. Thankfully the urn was on for teas and coffees as required, along with a delicious assortment of home baking. At lunchtime, a very tasty assortment of sandwiches was on offer.

We are hugely grateful to everyone who came along on Saturday and who achieved a huge amount readying St Conan’s for the coming season…and hopefully some lovely warm weather!
